I-275 Boone-Kenton County, Ky. Dept. of Transportation, JPC Pavement Repair, Diamond Grinding and Ramp Replacement

This job runs on I-275 west bound from the Turfway Road bridge to the airport interchange. Originally constructed as a continuously reinforced, 9" concrete pavement by Harper in 1976. An experimental design by the Transportation Cabinet where the concrete pavement was reinforced in both directions with reinforcing steel bars. While this pavement design works fine in some parts of the country, it did not work as well here in the Commonwealth (even though it lasted 20 years without repairs). In 1991, Harper re-constructed this section by rubblizing the existing continuous reinforced pavement, removing the reinforcing steel, seating the broken pavement, constructing a 3" asphalt bond breaker, then we placed the 9" un-bonded concrete overlay. Harper used Fly Ash in making concrete for the first time on that project and has been using it ever since. This project involves removing and replacing some failed slabs, installing some retro-fitted dowel bars, removing and replacing the ends of the ramps at the airport exits and diamond grinding the entire pavement surface for smoothness. The current project ought to extend the life of this interstate another 10 years or so with no maintenance! Kentucky taxpayers have sure benefited from concrete on this section of highway.

I-275 JPC Overlay, Campbell County, Kentucky

This is a KY. Dept. of Transportation project and we had a subcontract with John R. Jurgensen Company to place approx. 300,000 S.Y. of 10" and 13" concrete pavement. This project ran between KY Route 9 and the Combs-Hehl Bridge both Eastbound and Westbound. The construction of the Eastbound portion started by the end of July of 2011 and it was completed on Decemeber 1st of the same year. This portion of the job was done in 2 faces: in the first one we placed concrete on the shoulder and in 1 lane of traffic behind the barrier wall. In the second one, we moved the barrier wall so we could finish paving the rest of the lines. The WestBound portion must be completed by September of 2012.

JPC Overlay, Ky. Dept. of Transportation, Audubon Parkway, Henderson County, KY

This project constructed JPC overlay, bridge deck overlay, JPC pavement with grade and drain on Audubon Parkway from MP 8.525 to the Green River Bridge and bridge deck overlay on the KY 416 Bridge. We placed approx. 259,000 SY pavement on this project. We used a lot of new technology for this project, such as the new Gomaco 4000 slip form paver, which we used to pave 28 feet wide. We are also equipped with the Rex Con Batch Plant which we use as an aid in consistency while increasing production. Due to the winter season we had to suspend work for a couple of months (not without first arranging traffic back to its original configuration). However, we will hit it hard first thing in the spring and make short work of completing remaining work on the west bound lanes.
