The Harper Company believes there can be no compromise for safety. Safety is essential to the survival of a corporation and its employees. No shortcut is worth it when lives are on the line. We believe all employees are entitled to a safe workplace and the company fully intends to fulfill this obligation. However, employees should realize that safety is a two way street. No company can be successful without the cooperation of all its employees. No matter how new or old the employees, no matter the skill level or the experience, all employees matter. Thus must contribute to the cause.

It is our policy to provide a place of employment free of recognized hazards, which may cause illness, injury, or death to associates. It is also our policy to establish an effective and continuous safety program incorporating educational and monitoring procedures maintained to teach safety, correct deficiencies, and provide a safe working environment. We urge everyone to take no risks, no shortcuts, on anything else to undermine the integrity of the work and the lives of your fellow workers. Together we can and will create a safe environment.

Safety Management

The Harper Company employs a full-time Safety Director and several on-site Safety Officers. This ensures the communication lines are always open from Upper Management through every employee for any and all concerns.

Training

The Harper Company ensures that all superintendents, foremen, and managers receive continued safety education and training to remain in compliance with all recent standards and regulations. A Supervisor Spring Safety Meeting is held yearly and each jobsite has a yearly safety education and training meeting with all employees. In addition: each foreman has weekly toolbox talks with his/her crew on the various hazards of our industry.

Safety Incentive Programs

The Harper Company has several programs to reward individuals for their safe performance. One of these programs is the “Harper Safety Bucks.” Safety Bucks are rewarded for participation in an employee safety slogan contest, hours worked without a lost time injury, hours worked without a recordable injury, hours worked without a general liability, auto or equipment incident, having taken any safety awareness programs offered by the union and various other functions of the company. The safety bucks can be redeemed for various prizes such as shirts, coats, hats, etc. Award catalogs are kept in the jobsite office trailer.

Safety Slogan Contest

We hold a competition for the best safety slogan and reproduce the winning slogan as a hard hat decal. The most competitive entries are catchy phrases which underline the importance of safety, teamwork, and safe work habits.
